Departing from Riobamba and heading 35 kms to the north towards Quito, we arrive at Mocha in the Province of Tungurahua; an agricultural and cattle region, offering landscapes with diverse blends of colours typical to the zone which has the highest level of rural development in the country. A few kilometers from the main road, we get to the Hacienda El Rocio who will host the rest of the Carihuairazo trip. From here we travel on horse back accompanied by an expert guide from the region for around 1 hour until we arrive at the snow line; passing through the countryside where cattle farming and agriculture are prominent, part of this farming includes the breeding of fighting bulls; ascending through an environment of native sub-forest, pine and eucalyptus forests, brooks and green meadows; at 3600 mts we get to the typical paramo of the Andean region. Vast and eerie with its very unique flora and fauna, the paramo brings with it a feeling of tranquility and solitude due to its imposing landscape. Passing spots known as ‘The Solitary Tree’, ‘La Carbonería’, ‘The Look’, ‘Salasaca’ and if the clouds allow it enjoying views of the snow capped mountains and volcanoes of the inter Andean valley, make the journey so breathtaking that before we know it we are at the foothills of Carihuairazo.
