With 5,300 mts, the Altar is the fifth highest peak in Ecuador. The brilliance of its white snow capped peaks and the peace and impressive views of its crater lake are the ultimate prize for those who dare to ascend the Altar. Enjoy the day exploring this marvellous extinct volcano surrounded by 7 other snow capped volcanoes of incomparable beauty.

Before dawn we leave Abrapsungo in a 4x4 vehicle towards the village of Penipe, from there the journey continues along a narrow dirt road and further on to the mountains. Now the real fun begins! We leave the 4x4 behind and continue on mule along a rugged and muddy trail through which only mules can pass, towards the refuge on the mountain. The trail is difficult in places, but offers magnificent views, charming waterfalls and encounters with wild horses to keep us occupied. We arrive at the refuge 3 hours later, and rest before continuing for half an hour more on mule and one hour more by foot to the mystical lake. Don’t forget your camera!

This trip can be done in one day however it is also possible to spend the night in the refuge to take full advantage of this unforgettable experience in an isolated and remote spot on this beautiful planet. The conditions of the trail can be difficult, your own Wellington boots are a must for the extreme conditions in the wet season and all should be prepared for the low temperatures that exist in this region which keep dropping the closer we get to the summit.
