For many, many years there has existed a special tradition in the local indigenous communities of the Chimborazo province. This tradition is a type of pilgrimage to the eternal ices of the Chimborazo Volcano to obtain the thousand year old ice from the glaciers, which is then used to prepare drinks. Although the number of people that dedicate themselves to this activity has reduced notably over the years, this custom still persists until today. Blocks of ice are ‘farmed’ every Tuesday and Friday and are then transported by mule towards the city of Riobamba to be used in the preparation of the famous ‘raspados’ drinks. They are sold at the open markets on Thursday and Saturday. You can follow the trail of the ice farmers on foot, on horse back or in a 4x4 vehicle.
